Job Description

General Description of Position:

This permit authorizes the holder to care for and assist in the development and instruction of children in a child care and development program under the supervision of the holder of any Children's Center or Child Development Permit except a Child Development Assistant Permit.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Teacher Assistant must be able to consistently and successfully perform all essential functions of the position. This position is an at-will employment position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Direct Services:

  • Assist in providing leadership and guidance to children, families, and staff
  • Assist in the implementation of SJB Curriculum.
  • Assist in establishing a climate of respect for each child’s individual personality, physical characteristics and traits, culture, language and ethnic characteristics, family structure, developmental needs and behaviors.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with each child’s parent and/or caregiver. Relate to all children in encouraging and positive ways.
  • Assist in nurturing and facilitating the learning experience by meeting each child at their point of need through a variety of teaching methods, which include but are not limited to individualized care and small group experiences.
  • Interact daily with each child and support his or her learning process. Assist in implementing a positive approach of combining consistency, empathy, and culturally diverse practices.
  • Offer clear expressions of expectations with natural and logical consequences.
  • Assist and support the orientation process of families.
  • Assist with providing direct support, engagement, and extension of a child’s play and learning experiences by offering assistance and providing resources.
  • Assist in the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum activities for children.
  • Assist in designing interest areas to provide choices, opportunities for safe risks, and challenge children to interact, learn, create, and thrive while corresponding with the developmental and individual needs of each child, thus fostering the desire to learn.
  • Administrative
  • Assist in implement the program in accordance with the policies and philosophy of SJB Child Development Centers.
  • Assist with monthly staff meetings.
  • Assist with bi-weekly program meetings.
  • Assist with daily attendance of children.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate updates of records at site including but not limited to: enrollment, attendance, CACFP, communication logs, curriculum, child observations, and parent participation.
  • Assist with bi-monthly parent meetings as directed by Site Supervisor.
  • Assist with all proper documentation by deadlines, to include, but not limited to DRDPR’s, ITERS, ECERS, SACERS, Environmental Rating Scales, Lesson Plans, etc.)


Health & Safety

Assist in the monitoring of the provision of a safe, secure, clean, and challenging environment for children, families and staff.  Assist in the implementation of monthly fire drills, earthquake drills, and annual disaster drills.

Assist in reporting safety hazards and injuries the Teacher immediately.  Follow health and safety standards for children, families, and staff.  Watch for signs of illness in children at all times and assists in the direction of ill children to the proper medical attention.


Other Responsibilities

  • Travel when necessary to conduct SJB business.
  • Assist in supporting the Site Supervisor in meeting all Licensing and Sub-Contractor Regulations, Funding, Terms & Conditions, SJB policies & procedures, and the Education Code where applicable.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and employees.
  • Work as a member of the SJB team by promoting the mission, values, and philosophy of SJB.
  • Network with community and early childhood professionals.
  • Assist in facilitating and monitoring of the continual evaluation of each child’s progress.
  • Network with related outreach organizations to remain current on issues affecting children and       families as directed by Site Supervisor.
  • Assist with determining program/site needs and inform Associate Teacher.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6 to 11 Semester ECE or CD units (including 1 core course “CUR” =Curriculum, “CFC” =Child Family Community, “CGD” =Child Growth Development).
  • Teacher Assistant Permit or eligibility to obtain an Teacher Assistant Permit
  • Current TB Clearance and physical screening.
  • Current First Aid and CPR.
  • Active Fingerprint Clearance with DSS/CCL and/or submittal of Fingerprint Cards with signed Criminal Record Statement prior to employment.
  • Must possess California Driver’s License and meet minimum insurance requirements for personal vehicle and have a driving record which meets the standards set forth in Administrative Regulation 4532 and 4533.
  • Must be able to move up to Associate permit within determined time frame.


Knowledge of:

Title 5/22 Regulations, Principals of Child Development, Curriculum Development, Knowledge of Title 5 Funding Terms & Conditions, knowledge of basic clerical duties, office practices and procedures, and Microsoft Office applications.


Ability to:

  • Effectively implement regulations, guidelines and curriculum.
  • Effectively communicate with regulatory agents, parents, staff, and community representatives.
  • Establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with peers.
  • Communicate clearly, both written and verbally.
  • Perform basic arithmetic.
  • Prepare accurate reports as requested.
  • Advocate for the needs of children, family, and staff.
  • Update TB Clearance and physical screening annually.
  • Update First Aid and CPR certification annually.


Physical Demands: Works with preschool children and while performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to physically and occupationally reach for a child 25 feet away in 10 seconds or less, hear a child 50 feet away, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, and lift up to 30 pounds; sit on a low chair/floor for a long period of time and reach a child on a high play structure safely. Type and use a computer and mouse each workday.


Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions and wet (humid) conditions.
