High School School Paraprofessional

Location: Bland County Public Schools

Position Type: Full-Time | 10-Month (School Year)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bland County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and student-focused Paraprofessional to support instruction and help create a positive learning environment for our elementary students. This position plays a vital role in supporting teachers and helping students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(These duties are illustrative and not exhaustive.)

Instructional Support

Assist the teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activities

Provide one-on-one and small group instruction to reinforce skills in reading, math, and other subjects

Support students in completing assignments and understanding instructional material

Assist with differentiated instruction and accommodations as directed

Student Support

Assist students with academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs

Support students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when applicable

Help students stay on task and follow classroom expectations

Provide assistance with personal care (if assigned), including hygiene, feeding, or mobility needs

Classroom Management

Monitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and during transitions

Reinforce school and classroom rules and expectations

Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment

Clerical and Organizational Support

Prepare instructional materials, copies, and classroom resources

Maintain student records, files, and basic data as assigned

Assist with grading objective assignments and tracking student progress

Supervision Duties

Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional times

Assist with bus duty or hallway monitoring as assigned

Collaboration

Work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, and support staff

Communicate effectively with school personnel regarding student needs and progress

Participate in meetings, training, and professional development as required

Other Duties

Maintain confidentiality of student and school information (FERPA compliance)

Follow all School Board policies, procedures, and safety guidelines

Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic understanding of child development and instructional practices

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and implement lesson plans

Ability to work effectively with children of varying abilities and backgrounds

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to maintain patience, flexibility, and professionalism in a school setting

Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical conduct

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required

Must meet one of the following (per federal/Title I guidance commonly used in Virginia):

Completion of at least two years of college coursework, or

Associate's degree or higher, or

Passing score on an approved paraprofessional assessment

Experience working with children preferred

(Virginia divisions commonly require these qualifications to demonstrate ability to assist with instruction.)

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25-50 pounds as needed

Ability to assist students with mobility and physical needs

Ability to actively supervise students indoors and outdoors

Working Conditions

School environment (classroom, playground, cafeteria, bus areas)

Exposure to noise, activity, and varying student needs

May include working with students with behavioral or medical needs

Salary:$19,705 to $37,737 Per Year
