INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT Special Education
Qualifications:
High school graduate minimum with a successful passing grade on the Para Pro exam or two-year degree, or 60 hours of college credit
Excellent interpersonal skills
Prior work with children
Knowledge of computers
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Reports To: Principal
Job Goal
To assist in the supervision and instruction of special needs students under the supervision of a certified teacher in a special education classroom; assisting students in performing their academic studies, daily living, and special health care activities; monitoring students; and providing clerical support to teachers.
Performance Responsibilities
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials as directed to provide an opportunity for all special education students performing at different learning levels and/or with different functional limitations to participate in instructional programs.
Assists students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to medical conditions and/or physical limitations to allow students to function in the school environment.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., emergency procedures, staff meetings) to acquire and/or convey information relative to job functions.
Confers with teachers and/or parents if requested to provide information related to the student's progress as established in their individual educational program.
Implements lessons, under the direction of the teacher, to assist students in achieving their academic and social objectives.
Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement plans for remediation of student's deficiencies in accordance with the student's individual educational program goals, and ensuring students success in school.
Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, audio visual equipment, setting up art/science projects) to ensure availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
Monitors students in various activities (e.g., classroom, playground, halls, field trips, lunch) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
Assists other personnel for the purpose of contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work unit.
Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.

Terms of Employment:
182 days per year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
