Westfield Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for a Health Teacher at the elementary level for the 2026-2027 school year.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of authorized administrators shall:
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Westfield School Department, and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
- Instruct pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
- Teach physical education classes for handicapped pupils as necessary.
- Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
- Maintain control of storage and use of school-owed property.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Evaluate pupils' growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
- Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of Schools.
REPORTS TO:
Building Principal
Salary and terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Public Schools Unit A contract. Salary placement will be based on information contained in the application as submitted.
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation.
This position is subject to funding.
