Job Summary:
The High School Health Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-based instruction in health education, promoting the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students. This role involves teaching health-related topics such as nutrition, mental health, substance abuse prevention, human growth and development, disease prevention, and healthy decision-making. The teacher will plan and implement lessons aligned to the Maine Learning Results: Health Education Standards , manage the classroom effectively, assess student learning, and collaborate with colleagues and families to support student success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver daily health education lessons aligned with Maine Learning Results and local school curriculum
  • Teach topics such as mental health, substance use prevention, personal safety, healthy relationships, nutrition, and body systems
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment for all students
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to engage diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and English language learners
  • Integrate current, evidence-based health information and technology into instruction
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction based on data
  • Provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of student achievement
  • Foster critical thinking, responsible decision-making, and health advocacy skills
  • Collaborate with school counselors, nurses, and wellness staff to reinforce health and wellness education
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, school staff, and administration regarding student progress and curriculum
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school functions
  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with district and state policies

Qualifications:

  • Valid Maine Department of Education certification (Endorsement 520: Health)
  • CHRC (Criminal History Record Check) or the ability to obtain
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and evidence-based health practices
  • Experience teaching at the secondary level preferred
  • Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Commitment to equity, student wellness, and inclusive education
