Openings as of 6/2/2026 force display?True Openings as of 6/2/2026 Special Education Teacher, Probationary (Middle School), 8:1+1 Special Class Program JobID: 2629 Position Type: K-12/ Special Education Date Posted: 6/1/2026 Location: Mildred E Strang Middle School Date Available: 09/01/2026 Closing Date: Until Filled Special Education Teacher, Probationary (Middle School), 8:1+1 Special Class Program Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the School Principal and Director of PPS, the incumbent is responsible to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs, in a highly specialized program for students with severe disabilities, in the areas of academics, social/emotional development and life skills; documenting student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; and providing a safe and optimal learning environment. Minimum Qualifications : NYS Certification in Special Education/Students with Disabilities Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred. Successful prior experience working with students with Autism, including methodologies such as ABA required. Successful prior experience with the New York State Alternate Assessment preferred. Primary Activities Provide specially designed instruction for students, based on identified needs and strengths. Progress monitor student growth. Conducts assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues. Participates in Committee on Special Education meetings and assists in developing Individual Educational Programs ("IEP") for students. Implement students' IEP's and behavior management plans. Supervise support staff in the classroom. Provide support and training for staff in the classroom. Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations and institutions, as needed. Coordinates with administrators and other staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs. Serves as ready resource to students and parents to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; serves as liaison between home and school. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information, as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Director of PPS and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven methods of maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs. Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
