The Substitute Teacher plans and delivers lessons according to the regular teacher's curriculum plans, manages the classroom, and maintains a positive, engaging learning environment. Substitute teachers should have strong communication, organization and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of instructional techniques and child development is also crucial. At minimum, a Bachelor's degree is required, and some states may require a Substitute Teaching Certificate or Teaching Credential. Individuals may gain experience in roles such as a Teaching Assistant, Tutor or Child Care Worker before becoming a substitute teacher. This provides them with exposure and understanding of the school environment and the responsibilities involved in teaching.
