Hutchinson is a community of about 40,000 residents located in south central Kansas approximately 50 miles northwest of Wichita. Hutchinson Public Schools is a diverse school district with approximately 4,600 students. The student body is 75 percent Caucasian, 8.5 percent African American, 15 percent Hispanic with the balance Native American, Asian and other ethnic groups. About 67 percent of the districts students are on free or reduced-price lunches. There are eight elementary schools, one seventh grade attendance center, one eighth grade attendance center and Hutchinson High School. A new Career and Technology Education Academy is on the campus of Hutchinson High School.
